Our non-law enforcement offerings—including advanced narcotic, firearm, and explosive detection, and private security consulting — are available to businesses, organizations, and individuals across the DC Metro Region. Whether you require comprehensive security solutions for an event in Northern Virginia, risk assessments in Maryland, or private investigative support in the District, our professional team is ready to assist.

Our Special Police services, however, are exclusively available within Washington, DC. This focus allows us to maintain the highest standards of rapid response, specialized expertise, and operational effectiveness for our clients within the Nation's Capital.

Are Capitol K9 Detection Special Police Officers considered law enforcement officers?

Yes. Capitol K9 Detection Special Police Officers and their K9 partners are fully sworn law enforcement officers with all the powers and responsibilities associated with that role. This includes the authority to enforce laws, conduct investigations, and make arrests. Our officers and K9s undergo extensive training and certification to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and competency in protecting people and property.

How will Capitol K9 Detection Officers interact with the public?

Our officers and K9 teams are committed to serving the community with professionalism, integrity, and respect. They are trained in effective communication and de-escalation, approaching every interaction with courtesy and a focus on public safety. We expect our teams to treat everyone fairly and to uphold the trust placed in them as law enforcement officers.

Are your dogs and handlers certified?

All of our handlers and canines hold national certifications from multiple respected organizations, such as AK9I, NAPWDA, ICRWDA, and TSA. Our teams are carefully selected for their professionalism, discipline, and proven expertise in the field. Each team participates in rigorous, ongoing training that consistently surpasses government and industry standards, including scenario-based exercises, advanced detection techniques, and real-world simulations to ensure peak performance in any environment. Our unwavering commitment to excellence guarantees that every specialized detection and protection assignment is executed with the highest levels of certification, operational readiness, and reliability.

You work closely with federal agencies. Does this mean you check immigration status?

Capitol K9 Special Police Officers uphold local and federal laws in Washington, DC, but do not check immigration status during interactions with the public. Our officers are committed to treating all individuals with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or status. The focus of our law enforcement activities is on maintaining public safety and enforcing the law, not on immigration matters.

If an individual is taken into custody by one of our officers, our procedures require that their rights are upheld and that they are treated fairly throughout the process. Once custody is transferred, it becomes the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)—should they choose—to verify immigration status. This approach ensures that our officers remain focused on their primary responsibilities while allowing the appropriate authorities to handle immigration-related issues.

Do Special Police conduct traffic stops?

No, Special Police within Washington DC do not typically conduct traffic stops. Their primary role is to provide security and law enforcement services within their assigned jurisdictions, such as specific buildings, campuses, or properties. Special Police Officers generally do not have the authority to enforce traffic laws on public roads unless certain conditions are met.

There are two main exceptions: First, if the stop occurs on private property, such as a college campus, federal facility, corporate complex, or within certain HOA boundaries where Special Police have jurisdiction. Second, if a suspect is fleeing from a Special Police Officer after committing a crime, the officer may pursue and detain the individual, which could involve stopping their vehicle.

Regardless of the type of emergency vehicle, when you see emergency lights activated, pull to the side of the road and allow the vehicle to pass. If you believe you are being pulled over by an unauthorized vehicle, call 911 and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.

What happens if someone assaults or interferes with a Capitol K9 Detection Officer or K9?

Assault, battery, or any form of interference with our officers, K9s, investigations, or arrests—including vandalism of department vehicles—is a serious criminal offense. Such actions will not be tolerated and will result in immediate arrest. Our officers have a duty to protect themselves, their K9 partners, and the integrity of their operations, and will respond decisively to any threats or obstruction.

What are the legal consequences of arrest in Washington, DC?

In Washington, DC, all arrests and convictions resulting from actions against Capitol K9 Detection Special Police Officers are processed through the federal court system. This means that violations are treated as federal offenses, carrying significant legal consequences. Individuals arrested in these circumstances face prosecution and sentencing at the federal level, making it vital to respect the authority of our officers and the law. Only a Presidential Pardon can remove a federal conviction from a record.
