Special Police Officers (SPO)
Our Special Police Officers (SPOs) in Washington, D.C., are highly trained professionals dedicated to public safety. Commissioned by the Mayor, each officer undergoes a rigorous selection process and comprehensive training before joining Capitol K9. Within their assigned property and its immediate vicinity, SPOs have full law enforcement authority, equal to that of DC Metro Police. They are responsible for protecting people and property, deterring crime, and making arrests within their jurisdiction to ensure a secure environment.
What is a DC Special Police Officer
While not municipal Police Officers with DC Metro Police, Special Police Officers (SPOs) are fully commissioned law enforcement officers within the District of Columbia, and should not be confused with security guards. SPOs are authorized under DC law to perform the same duties as municipal police officers, including making arrests, conducting investigations, serving warrants, and enforcing local laws and regulations within their designated jurisdictions.
